The Pipe Shed (October 2020)
A storage shed for explosives. Constructed from one of the 800 pipes manufactured in 1940 for the Rangitata Diversion Race. It is the only structure in Methven rated as Category I by Heritage New Zealand [1]
The Brown Pub
Brown Pub, Methven, Mt Hutt in the background (October 2020)
The Brown Pub was originally built in 1883 but was destroyed by fire on 19 June 1922 and subsequently rebuilt. It suffered damage in the 2010 Canterbury earthquake and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and was damaged by fire in 2019. [2][3]
The Blue Pub

The Blue Pub was damaged by fire in 1918 and also suffered damage in the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010–11 [4]



Methven War Memorial[edit]

The War Memorial was unveiled in February 1930.[5] It commemorates the 69 men lost in the First World War and the 15 men lost in the Second World War.[6]

Methven Historical Society Building[edit]

This was built in 1917 at 7 Bank Street. It was damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes and was a category 2 historic place. It was demolished in 2013.[7]

Methven Public Library[edit]

Built between 1883 and 1884 at 60 Main Street, in an Italianate style. It was damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes and was a category 2 historic place. It was demolished in 2013.[7]

Mount Hutt Road Board Building[edit]

The Road Board Building was built in 1879 on Methven's Main Street and is one of the earliest buildings in the town. The building was classified as a Category 2 historic place and registered on the New Zealand Heritage List in October 2019.[8] The building currently serves as the Methven Toy Library.[9]

All Saints Anglican Church[edit]

The Anglican Church (1 Chapman Street) was built in 1880.[10]

Methven Post Office[edit]

The Methven Post Office reopened as an Irish bar and restaurant in 2015. The original bank safe and other historical items still remain in the building.[11]
