WikiCup 2023 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Holiday Greetings[edit]

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Always a pleasure to see your work. ―Buster7

Hello! Thank you for posting the blurb about the floods over in Brazil. I just wanted to ask if there's an easy way to update the number of casualties indicated in it, since (unfortunately) all of the parameters have risen again since the last update. Oltrepier (talk) 19:28, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is asking me, or if I'm unavailable, requesting it at WP:ERRORS. I've updated the totals. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:31, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, ok, thank you for clarifying! Oltrepier (talk) 20:07, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Cam Booser[edit]

On 11 May 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cam Booser, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Cam Booser retired from baseball to work as a carpenter in 2017 and made it to Major League Baseball in 2024? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cam Booser. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cam Booser), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Jorge Alfaro edit?[edit]

I noticed you deleted an edit to Jorge Alfaro’s page due to “offensive content”. I remember seeing a case of degrading comments added to Aaron Whitefield’s page, yet the edit was simply reverted. May I inquire what the anonymous user commented that required complete deletion? AmericanAssociationKnowItAll (talk) 20:12, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what was on the Whitefield page, but the Alfaro edit involved beastiality. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:01, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Muboshgu. Can I ask why, in log ID 162034446, you hid this revision as RD2: Serious BLP violations, when this didn't appear to have been either a threat or such a violation? Primefac has previously restored one revision you hid previously, on the grounds that, we get death notices all the time, they're easily checked and not that serious of a BLP vio, which is how I understand the policy. I noticed your edit summary, WP:LTA, but I don't see how this explains the revdel. Is there a reason why it's necessary? ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 19:50, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Neveselbert, I guess we have different definitions of what is a serious BLP violation and what isn't. This is long term abuse by an IP who goes around writing that the subject has died. I consider that a serious BLP violation. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:00, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Primefac's interpretation. It may well be a violation, but that doesn't mean it's serious enough to hide it. I don't think hiding revisions unnecessarily is helpful. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 20:02, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Though I disagree with you both, WP:REVDEL is clear about being intended for limited use and so I will un-revdel their lies about two ex-POTUSes dying today. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:06, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how quickly?[edit]

I really hate to ask this, but how quickly does someone have to be on top of this when it's been happening for over a decade? It's very frustrating that this has been going on for so long. It seems like because this is a highly-valued contributor, we are reluctant to deal with their behavior problems. I don't want to see this person gone. I just want to see them clean up their act, and no one seems to want to help make that happen. Valereee (talk) 23:21, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't this discussion stay on AN/I? – Muboshgu (talk) 01:09, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
